Don’t underestimate charging power
Especially if you often drive long distances, you should pay attention to proper DC charging power. It should be at least 100 kW so that the charging stop doesn’t turn into an XXL coffee break – more is of course always better. Modern luxury cars should ideally have an 800-volt system and provide charging power of over 250 kW.
Choose the battery size carefully
Many people choose large batteries for fear of not having enough range. You usually don’t need this big chunk in everyday life. Large batteries make the car more expensive, heavier and take longer to charge. For commuters, 40 to 60 kWh is often enough.
Think range realistically
The WLTP information sounds nice, but has little to do with real conditions. Practical experience is more exciting: How far can the car go in city traffic, on country roads or at 130 km/h on the motorway? In ours CHIP testing let’s get to the bottom of this question.
Keep an eye on consumption
An economical electric car (less than 17 kWh/100 km in a third mix) is not only easy on the wallet, but also on your nerves because fewer charging breaks are necessary. Anyone who uses more will end up at the column more often.
Check charging infrastructure
No wallbox at home? Then good charging performance and a dense public network are mandatory. It becomes practical when the car can plug & charge – holding a card or opening an app is then history.
Don’t forget AC charging power
Three-phase 11 kW charging is almost standard for everyday use. Less is only possible if you regularly plug the car into the socket at home overnight. Large batteries should ideally be able to charge with 22 kW, which halves the charging time.
Use space cleverly
Not everyone needs an SUV or van right away. Compact models are often sufficient for singles or couples – the main thing is that the space concept is well thought out, for example with variably foldable rear seats. In addition, compared to combustion engines, electric cars are often much larger inside than expected.
Ease of use counts
Clear infotainment, a navigation system with charging planning and functioning voice control make life easier. Nobody wants complicated menus and nested settings anymore.
