Mattresses are sometimes very large and therefore cannot be shipped or transported easily. To avoid the need for a shipping company, many providers deliver them compressed and rolled up. This means that even thick mattresses with a large lying surface fit compactly into one package.

However, depending on the product, opening it can be dangerous: If you use a knife to open the vacuum packaging, you risk damaging the mattress – but you can also injure yourself!

If you have a knife or sharp scissors in your hand, you can lose control of the blade and inflict cuts and stab wounds. Luckily there is a better solution.

Here’s how you should really unpack a mattress

Instead of regular scissors or a carpet or kitchen knife, there are other ways to safely open the packaging of a rolled mattress. The provider Ravensberger mattresses writes about this on his website:

“Carefully cut open the outer stretch film using scissors with a rounded tip. Important: Please do not use a knife to avoid damage.”

Some manufacturers also include a special tool when they deliver new mattresses (see picture). This mattress opener looks strange at first and may be ignored by many customers.

The small plastic card has a short, metallic blade. The reinforced plastic tip is pierced through the packaging of the mattress, then the small knife can be pulled through the film. So you no longer have to pay attention to the correct cutting depth.
