The case of the LG Xboom Buds Plus is small and simple. A practical LED changes color depending on the battery level (green at over 80 percent, yellow between 20 and 80 percent, red under 20 percent). The material is plastic, the lid creaks a bit and if the lid is open, a bud can fall out if you shake it vigorously. The buds themselves are made of roughened plastic with a good grip, the ear tips sit non-slip in the ear, but are susceptible to dirt. The wearing comfort is good, but the eartips can press a bit. We found the delayed volume to be annoying: after short pauses in playback, the volume of the sound increases for one to two seconds until the target volume is reached.
The touch control uses a touch mechanism that requires you to tap on the surfaces, but it seems a bit sluggish. The features are strong: dynamic ANC, ambient mode, multipoint, IPX4, wear detection and wireless charging.
The ANC attenuates bass significantly better than with the Lite, mids and highs are attenuated to a similar level – but could be better hidden. Compared to the Lite version, the app offers Auracast with a browser and broadcast display – basically “Bluetooth audio for listening along”, which displays nearby broadcasts that you can join.
There are also extras such as UV exposure, which is supposed to remove harmful bacteria from the eargel, and a bone sound sensor, which is supposed to improve voice recording. In addition, the case can be connected to audio sources via a jack, so that the signal is routed from the case to the buds via Bluetooth. There is also a whisper mode for phone calls, where the right earpiece is removed and acts as a microphone. The basic functions remain the same: 8-band equalizer, freely assignable shortcuts and presets.
