City e-bikes are similar in many ways to trekking or touring e-bikes, but are specifically designed for everyday use in the city. They are aimed at commuters and leisure cyclists who primarily travel in urban areas and rely on comfort, practicality and riding pleasure.
Comfort on asphalt, gravel and cobblestones
In contrast to sporty e-bikes, off-road suitability is not important for a city e-bike. Rather, they should be able to be driven comfortably and safely on different city surfaces – from asphalt to cobblestones to fine gravel. Good ergonomics, an upright sitting position and agile handling are crucial for moving through city traffic without stress.
What is typical and practical about a city e-bike?
- A sturdy luggage rack with sufficient load capacity for bags, shopping or laptop backpacks
- Mudguards that keep your back dry even in the rain
- Strong lighting that makes you clearly visible and provides early warning
- And last but not least, an integrated lock that offers additional security for short stops along the way
Battery: Range isn’t everything
The range is less important for city e-bikes than for touring bikes, but the motor should still be powerful enough to handle climbs or stop-and-go situations without any effort. Anyone who regularly drives longer distances will benefit from larger batteries (e.g. 625-750 Wh).
Also important: the position of the battery. A battery integrated into the frame ensures a better center of gravity and a stylish design, while a removable battery makes charging more convenient – e.g. B. if there is no electricity connection at the bicycle parking space at home.
Low-maintenance and robust: belt drive is a plus point
Anyone who uses their bike every day will be happy about the low-maintenance equipment. A belt drive in combination with a hub gear is a recommended choice here: no oily chain wear, no complex maintenance – ideal for everyday use.
Comfortable entry: The frame makes the difference
Many city e-bikes have a low entry, which makes it easier to get on and off at traffic lights or during spontaneous stops. Depending on your mobility and personal preference, there are also trapezoidal or diamond frames that appear sportier or offer more frame rigidity.
Payload & total weight: Don’t underestimate!
Anyone traveling with shopping, a child seat or even a trailer should pay attention to the permissible total weight. Standard models are often 120 kg, special “plus” models sometimes offer up to 150 kg – and therefore more flexibility in everyday life.
Security in focus: More than just a lock
An integrated frame lock is a good start – but nothing more. Especially in urban areas, you should also carry a high-quality chain lock or folding lock. It’s best to choose a lock that performed well at Stiftung Warentest.
