When Android displays a “circle with plus” symbol, it has a certain advantage – but it can also become a problem.
Symbols on cell phones always pose puzzles. Sure, most people can still identify the WLAN icon or the battery indicator. But often cryptic symbols appear in the status bar, leaving users perplexed – such as this article in Google support forum shows:
“Have a ‘+in a circle‘ character at the top of the display. What is that
I have no idea how to get rid of it.”

The “plus in a circle” symbol indicates on most Android devices that the Data saver mode (Data Saver) is activated – a function that reduces mobile data consumption. Basically a very useful feature that is usually activated consciously. Nevertheless, it still happens that users come across the symbol by chance.
Data saving mode: useful or not?

Depending on the manufacturer, the symbol may look different. With Samsung Galaxy devices it is about through two arrows in a triangle displayed. The option is also available on iPhones, but no symbol is displayed here.
The mode can also have some unwanted ones Disadvantages because it restricts the background activities of apps. This can result in images only being reloaded by typing.
It can also mean that you receive certain notifications with a delay or not at all. The “Mobile Hotspot” function cannot be used when data saver mode is activated.
In short: the function is well suited to Save data volume – however, you have to make do with a few restrictions. At least on Android, you can exclude certain apps from Data Saver so that they continue to function without restriction.
How to turn data saver mode on or off

- On most Android devices, such as a Google Pixel, under Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver
- For Samsung Galaxy devices under Settings > Connections > Data Usage > Data Saving
- For iPhones, go to Settings > Cellular > SIM card > Data mode > Data saving
Some apps, such as Instagram or Snapchat, offer their own data saver that can be activated via the app’s internal settings.
