Apple was a pioneer in smartwatches and the Apple Watch remains a bestseller. But the big competitor Samsung doesn’t sleep: Is the Galaxy Watch just as good?
Note: Classification as a price tip or according to price limits is based on the cheapest shop offer in our price comparison; the price in the linked shop may differ.
Apple was the market leader among wearables for a long time, but now there are Chinese brands very successful. This is also due to the fact that all intelligent watches are grouped together under “wearables” – not just smartwatches, but also fitness trackers and various types of sports watches. Because Apple is the only one Apple Watch (test) offers, other manufacturers can score points with cheaper models.
A manufacturer that follows a similar approach to Apple is its eternal competitor Samsung Galaxy Watch (test). So the question here is: Would you rather Apple or Samsung? And as with cell phones, there is an overarching answer: If you already have an iPhone and an iPad, you should probably get the Apple Watch. There are similarly good synergies between the Samsung devices. In addition, the Apple Watch does not get along well with the Samsung cell phone and vice versa.
But apart from the fundamental decision: where do the smartwatches differ from a purely technical perspective? Is one really better than the other? In the table you will first see some details about both models, then we will look at the differences.
What are the differences between Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch?
To state the obvious: In our smartwatch test The Apple Watch almost always performs better than its Samsung counterpart. In terms of operation and battery, the two models are quite equal, but the Apple Watch has more to offer in terms of features. This applies to both the standard models and the premium versions, i.e. the Apple Watch Ultra (test) and the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra (test).
The Sensors There is little difference for body analysis; both watches offer the usual measurements of pulse, blood oxygen level, ECG and skin temperature. The Galaxy Watch had one point ahead of the Apple model at times: the sensor can be adjusted using a blood pressure monitor and then the Blood pressure Not measuring, but estimating. The Apple Watch can now also detect changes in blood pressure – which is just as practical.
Since the 8th generation, the Galaxy Watch has been able to measure antioxidants in the body. It remains to be seen whether Apple will also follow suit here. What the Apple Watch has ahead of the Samsung model, however, is that it can also… Dive can be used, so it can withstand the increased pressure under water. The Galaxy Watch is only suitable for swimming. In addition, both smartwatches can use mobile communications, but only the Apple Watch supports this 5G network.
There are also smaller aspects in which the Apple Watch performs better: In addition to the visual aspect Heart rate sensor there is an electric one. When the electrode in the rotating crown is touched, a more precise pulse measurement is carried out if necessary. There are also advantages when it comes to smart functions: For example, the Apple Watch can stream music directly via the app directly on the watch, whereas the Galaxy Watch needs a smartphone for this.
For whom is which smartwatch worthwhile?
The Galaxy Watch has one fundamental advantage: it is cheaper than the Apple Watch. But if you already own an iPhone, that’s probably no surprise. From a purely technical perspective, the Apple Watch is just ahead. But this is not due to basic functions, but rather to practical extras. Both are top devices. The Galaxy Watch pairs with all Android phones, so you’re not limited to Samsung. Apple is here more restrictive. The fact that all Apple devices work together without any problems is also a positive aspect.
