A RAM disk is quick to create, so you can easily check whether it’s something for you. Unpack the AIM toolkit and run the batch file on Windows.
Once that’s done, start the RAM disk configurator via the desktop shortcut. The tool’s interface is simple, there are three tabs, with the most important settings being found in the “Basic” area.
What is particularly important is the size of the RAM disk. The default setting here is in MBytes, so you can see that savings are being made here. Depending on your RAM, you can use 1 GB or more, but 100 MB is sufficient for simple tests.
You can also specify a drive letter and the file system used. NTFS is the best option here for Windows. You can leave the remaining options as they are; clicking “OK” will create the RAM disk. A new drive will then appear in Explorer, which you can use like any SSD or hard drive, at least at first glance.
Important: The toolkit indicates possible problems with Windows Fast Startup. Our tip: try out whether this applies to your area of application. An alternative is to turn off fast startup.
