Fries, gyros and currywurst on one plate – the “taxi plate” is cult in the Ruhr area. On Instagram, a creator is now showing a Thermomix version with fewer additives.
The so-called Taxi plate is one of the most famous snack dishes from the Ruhr area. Classically it consists of French fries, currywurst and gyros, often accompanied by tzatziki, mayonnaise and onions.
Classic snacks from the Ruhr area become a social media trend
The dish is best known for its hearty character. Originally it was considered a typical meal for night owls, shift workers or taxi drivers – hence the name.
In recent years, however, the plate has started a second career: variants of the classic are appearing more and more frequently on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Now jump also the Thermomix company on the trend:
Thermomix version with fewer additives
An Instagram post now shows an unusual variant: taxi plates made from the Thermomix.
The idea behind it: Many ingredients can be made yourself. This allows finished products and additives to be reduced – at least to some extent.
For example, the video shows:
- Tzatziki freshly mixed
- Homemade curry sauce
- Meat and side dishes combined
The result remains a fairly hearty dish, but seems a little “cleaner” than some snack versions with ready-made sauces.
What’s on the plate at the taxi plate
However, the basic idea remains the same as the classic snack dish. Typical components are:
- French fries
- Gyro meat
- Currywurst with curry sauce
- Tzatziki
- Onions
- Mayonnaise or other sauces
It is precisely this combination of different snack classics that makes it so appealing. The plate is filling, quick to prepare and is considered typical “soul food”.
Social media is creating new hype
The taxi plate is no longer just a Ruhrpott phenomenon. Through social media, the dish spread far beyond the region. Orders and search queries have increased significantly in recent years.
The Thermomix version fits perfectly with the current trend: cooking snack dishes at home, but with fresh ingredients and a little more control over the ingredients.
This doesn’t make the taxi plate completely healthy. But at least amateur cooks know exactly what’s in their food.
