As practical as a car is, you also have to take care of a lot of things and don’t miss important appointments such as the general inspection. An app from the state helps with this.
Every two years, cars have to undergo a general inspection (HU), also known colloquially as a TÜV test. New cars are an exception; the first inspection is only due after three years. Either way, the HU is mandatory and anyone who exceeds the deadline is committing a traffic offense, which can mean fines and points in the driving fitness register:
- less than 2 months overdated: Warning without fine
- 2 or 3 months overdated: 15 euros fine
- 4 or 5 months overdated: 25 euros fine
- 6 months or more overdrawn; 60 euros fine and 1 point
What many drivers don’t know is that if the HU deadline is exceeded by more than two months, a more intensive test is carried out, the so-called in-depth HU. A surcharge is also required for this.
Car fans of course have the HU dates in mind and you can also see them on that Check license platewhen the HU is due. But it’s more convenient with this one App i-car which is provided by the Federal Motor Transport Authority. It provides the digital vehicle registration document and indicates upcoming HU appointments.
Note on the HU deadline in the app

The digital vehicle registration document with all relevant data is located in the i-Kfz app. How to retrieve the app’s vehicle registration document we show in this article. Practically, you can always check immediately when the HU is due on your car. As the deadline approaches, the app will also remind you with a clear message:
- You will see a color-highlighted notice on the home page indicating that the HU will soon be overdue.
- The same information also appears within the digital vehicle registration document.
- Anyone who taps on the note will find out details about when the HU must be carried out at the latest.
- Unfortunately, you have to actively check the app to see whether the HU is due; there is still no push notification when the deadline is approaching.
If the HU is carried out successfully, the data in the app is automatically updated.
Retrieve HU report digitally

Access is via QR code or the KBA website with special access data. You must then enter the number of the investigation report, the key number of the monitoring institution and an identification number.
The DUB can also be passed on to third parties, for example when selling a vehicle, and the release can be revoked by exchanging the access data. It is available in German and partly in English and does not require any personal data.
Although it does not yet completely replace the paper report, it can be used for almost all purposes and is based on the relevant legal regulations.
