Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is not something to be trifled with. The disease can cause severe inflammation of the meninges or spinal cord. It is usually caused by viruses that are transmitted through tick bites.
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), in Germany there is primarily:
- Bavaria
- Baden-Württemberg
- South Hesse
- in southeastern Thuringia
- Saxony
- since 2022 also in southeastern Brandenburg
a risk of TBE infection. Individual risk areas are also located in Central Hesse, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
For 2026 there will be one RKI map Two new risk areas have been identified: There are also the district of North Saxony in Saxony and the urban district of Halle (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt, as stated in a current RKI report.
