The experts in the CHIP test center test all open-ear headphones using the same procedure. Our test verdict is based on the partial results in the categories of sound quality, comfort and features as well as mobility.
The Sound quality might 35 percent the overall grade. As a practical test scenario, we stream music in maximum quality via Spotify while the headphones are connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth. Our experts evaluate the sound subjectively and pay particular attention to clarity and balance, as well as bass performance and voice quality. We test the sound with the same standards that we place on in-ear headphones. However, the open ears with the best sound quality do not come close to the sound of the best in-ears due to their design. Our rating gives you a realistic assessment of the compromise you have to make when it comes to sound compared to closed headphones.
Also too 35 percent flows the category Comfort and facilities in the overall ranking. We pay particular attention to how well the headphones can withstand dynamic movements, whether they sit comfortably over long periods of time and how well they can be worn with glasses. Our testers also estimate how strongly the music from the open ears leaks out and can disturb people nearby. We also check the quality of the microphones under realistic conditions, during video conferences in the office and during outdoor phone calls with street noise. We also evaluate the additional range of functions, such as dust/water protection or wear detection.
The category mobility makes more 30 percent of the test result. Here we measure the battery life of the headphones in the test center. For models with a charging case, we also measure the total running time. We also check how long the charging process takes overall and how full the battery is after 15 minutes of charging. The range of Bluetooth reception is also included in this area.
