Fritz, formerly known as AVM, has released the final version of FritzOS 8.20 for additional routers, thus completing the previous laboratory phase.
The update is available now the FritzBox 7690 on the DSL connection as well as for the FritzBox 5690 for fiber optics. Both models are among the company’s most powerful routers and benefit from the new firmware through numerous technical and functional improvements. The update can either be started manually via the user interface or occurs automatically if the appropriate settings are activated.
A significant innovation is the optimized online monitor, which displays current Internet usage more clearly. The information is now presented graphically so that it is immediately clear which devices in the home network use a particularly large amount of bandwidth. This is intended to make it easier to analyze performance losses and help to specifically identify bottlenecks.
The mesh technology has also been further improved. Fritz repeaters now decide independently which connection path to the FritzBox offers the highest data throughput. This dynamic selection is intended to increase the stability of the wireless network, especially in larger living spaces or multi-story buildings, without users having to intervene.

In the area of data exchange, FritzOS 8.20 expands the functions of FritzNAS with a simplified option for folder sharing. Directories can now be shared via link, making it easy to share content such as photos or documents with other people. External cloud services are not necessary for this as the data is provided either in the local network or via your own internet connection.
The smart home functions have also been further developed. Automations can now be set in more detail, for example to better coordinate thermostats, lighting and sensors. At the same time, the parental control user interface has been revised. Access profiles and assigned devices are presented more clearly, making it easier to manage time limits and locks.
For users with high demands on the reliability of the Internet connection, FritzOS 8.20 offers the new FritzFailsafe feature. If the primary DSL or fiber optic connection fails, the FritzBox can automatically switch to a previously configured replacement connection, such as a mobile phone stick. In addition, energy management has been optimized. Energy Efficient Ethernet can now be configured separately for WAN and LAN ports to specifically reduce the power consumption of unused ports.
