Spring will get off to an early start in 2026. It looks like the pleasant temperatures will remain for now. But should you turn off the heating now?
Meteorologically, spring 2026 has already begun. Just in time for the start, the temperatures rise significantly during the day. Many people enjoy this, but the truth is that it still remains cold in the morning and evening.
This transitional period with strong temperature fluctuations requires an adapted heating and ventilation strategy and thus opens up considerable savings potential. “Who now cleverly heats and ventilates efficientlycan significantly reduce energy consumption and heating costs”says Markus Lau, technology expert at the German Liquid Gas Association (DVFG).
He gives consumers concrete tips on how this can work.
Turn off the heating now?

The idea is to save costs by switching off the heating as early as possible. In principle, this argument is not wrong: if it doesn’t work, it can’t incur any costs. But firstly, it will be uncomfortable for you in your apartment and secondly, damage to the house can occur if rooms cool down too much.
Despite changeable outside temperatures, it is therefore worth keeping the heating on at a low level. According to Lau, frequently turning the thermostat up and down leads to unnecessary energy consumption and increased costs.
“Lowering instead of switching off is particularly useful for poorly insulated existing buildings. This means that rooms can be brought back to a comfortable temperature more quickly when it gets frosty again in the evening.”
Ventilate properly and save energy

To adapt heating behavior, the ventilation strategy should also be adjusted in the last third of the heating period.
In spring, you should ventilate three to four times a day for ten to 15 minutes each time. Unlike in winter, ventilation now takes longer because the warm air contains more moisture.
It is ideal to ventilate the room for the last time in the afternoon, when the outside temperatures are still mild. Shock or cross ventilation ensures rapid air exchange, while continuous ventilation with tilted windows wastes energy.
Important: Radiator valves should be closed during ventilation.
Spring cleaning for radiators

Clean radiators give off heat better and save energy. “Radiators pull dust and lint through the slats. Thorough cleaning ensures that the heat reaches the room optimally”explains Lau.
Important: Before cleaning, the radiators should be switched off and cooled down.
